How it started: I came up with the idea for a Boston College Center for Innovation and Design in my Design Thinking and Strategy course this Fall 2021. The class started out by challenging us to identify a human-centered problem that touched our lives in a meaningful way.

After studying at Boston College, I wished greatly to see a greater emphasis on interdisciplinary learning and innovative thinking at Boston College.

Additionally, after speaking with other BC students and with peers enrolled in innovation programs at other universities, such as USC’s Iovine and Young Academy and Stanford’s d.school, I was inspired to help BC create a similarly rewarding interdisciplinary experience for its students.

After testing out a few prototypes on my respective audience, I decided it was best to present the need for a final solution through a creative metaphor:

I proposed the idea of a Boston College Center for Innovation and Design as the solution to my project to my class. But, I found myself unsatisfied to think that a center like this felt completely far-fetched.

could this center ever really exist at Boston College???!!

I believe that it can. And I’m not alone.

I took steps to meet with the Associate Vice Provost for Design and Innovation Strategies at Boston College, Sunand Bhattacharya. Through outlining my ideas to him, he revealed that his job at BC centers around proposing the plans for a Boston College Center for Innovation and Design. He also described how beneficial it would be for the administration to see a student perspective on the proposal.

Knowing I have a chance to make actual change at the university level with this solution, I took preliminary steps in creating mock-ups for a BCID website using Adobe XD to incite action at the administrative level if presented in full at the end of the Spring 2022 semester.

Boston College Center for Innovation and Design - Adobe XD Website Mock-ups

I created these mock-ups using UX design and UX writing from scratch.

I gained inspiration from researching the USC IYA and Stanford d.school websites.
