 MIXED MEDIA + DESIGN

Mixed Media Design

In Issues and Approaches and Advanced Mixed Media classes at Boston College, I learned to use multiple mediums and a diversified range of materials to create complex designs. I developed a particular interest in the combination of digital design and paint to create collages and linocut prints on physical material.

Check out my favorite pieces below!

Two-Sided Mind

Medium(s): Linoleum Print + Acrylic Painting

Method: I created two digital pattern sketches and carved them into 8x8 pieces of linoleum with an exacto knife. Next, I chose a color scheme and printed the patterns onto paper and 3D wooden pieces.

Given the rough texture and 6-sided nature of the wood, I had to tweak my printing approach. I used a lot of elbow grease to ensure the pattern appeared clear enough on the wood. I also made compositional decisions as to which pattern details to display on each side of the wood. Both tweaks resulted in grungy and dynamic 3D prints as seen from any angle.

Trust Science

Medium(s): Linocut print + Ink painting.

Method: For my linocut, I decided to create a fingerprint pattern to reflect my group’s overall theme of trusting science. I used an exacto knife to meticulously carve each curved shape into the linoleum before rolling the completed pattern in paint and printing onto mixed media paper.

Burning Bridges

Medium(s): Acrylic Painting + Collage

Method: Inspired by Surrealist Art (and potentially Alfred Hitchcock’s, The Birds) I created “Burning Bridges” for an “Artist Book” assignment. Challenging the conventional notion of a flippable “book”, I designed my artist book to tell a complete story to viewers as they walk from the leftmost panel to the rightmost panel.

Materials: acrylic paint, photographs, gesso gel, and mixed media canvas paper.

Something that Flies

Medium(s): Digital Illustration + Paper Prints

Method: I created these physical paper airplanes based off of two digital illustrations I made using Adobe Fresco, primarily the watercolor live brushes and vector brushes. I printed the digital pieces on double-sided paper before shaping them into working paper airplanes.
